"His righteousness endures forever."

Text: 2 Corinthians 9:9

GOD AS THE GIVER OF BLESSINGS

Paul cited the famous Psalm 112 to encourage the Corinthians to practise righteousness. Psalm 112 is a classic text that describes the activities of the righteous man.

“As it is written:
‘He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever.'”
2 Corinthians 9:9

1. “As it is written”

a) Paul cited the Scriptures:
i) For insights
ii) For instruction
iii) For inspiration
b) Paul’s knowledge of the Scriptures is evident.
i) He cited the Scriptures correctly.
ii) He cited it appropriately.
iii) There is much to learn from the Scriptures.

2. The activities of the righteous

a) “He has dispersed abroad”
i) The righteous does not focus on himself and his family alone.
ii) Where he sees needs and if he can help, he would do just that.
iii) This includes giving (dispersing) abroad.
b) “He has given to the poor”
i) Practical concern for the poor is well explained in Deuteronomy 15:7-11.
ii) The heart should not be hardened with regards to the poor.
iii) There will always be the poor and the righteous must seek to fulfil his duty to the poor.
c) “His righteousness endures forever”
i) Giving to the poor is an expression of his righteousness.
ii) Righteousness should endure forever.
d) Giving to the poor
i) There must be no grief nor regret when giving to the poor.
ii) Giving to the poor must be seen as giving to “a brother”.
