Day 128

"He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully."

Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6

THE IMAGERY OF SOWING

Paul aptly used an imagery of sowing to help the Corinthians understand the spirit of giving.

“But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
2 Corinthians 9:6

1. “But this I say”

a) Paul sought to explain his personal understanding about giving.
b) His understanding was drawn from the Scriptures.

“There is one who scatters, yet increases more;
And there is one who withholds more than is right,
But it leads to poverty.
The generous soul will be made rich,
And he who waters will also be watered himself.”
Proverbs 11:24-25

c) Paul believed in the following truths:
i) The generosity of the soul.
ii) The exercise of faith and love in giving.

2. “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly”

a) This is a fact.
b) The farmer who sows sparingly cannot expect more than what he has sown.
c) He must sow in faith and hope.
d) He must believe that God would bless his trust in Him.

3. “He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully”

a) The same principle is applied.
b) The farmer who sows bountifully can look forward to a greater yield from his field.

4. In the spiritual realm

a) Paul applied this principle of sowing and reaping when he wrote to the Galatians.
b) If one sows to his flesh he will reap corruption.
c) But if he sows to the Spirit, he will reap life everlasting.
d) The challenge in the following text is very clear!

“And let us not grow weary while doing good,
for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all,
especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
Galatians 6:9-10
