"And in this I give advice..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 8:10

SOUND ADVICE

Paul was understandably disturbed that that Corinthian Church began on a project of giving towards ministry, but had failed to complete what they had begun.

“And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only
to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago;
but now you also must complete the doing of it;
that as there was a readiness to desire it,
so there also may be a completion out of what you have.”
2 Corinthians 8:10-11

1. “And in this I give advice”

a) The word “advice” comes from knowledge.
b) The opinion Paul was giving was based on sound knowledge.

2. “It is to your advantage”

a) The word “advantage” was not used in a selfish manner.
b) It is used idiomatically, impersonally.
c) Meaning intended: “It would be good for you.”

3. The Lapse of the Corinthians

a) They embarked on a project of giving.
b) The commencement was a whole year back.
c) A year later, the project was still incomplete.
d) This did not reflect well on the Church.

4. Encouragement given

a) They must remember what they had commenced to do a year back.
b) There was a readiness to desire it.
i) There was a desire to embark on the project.
ii) There must be a will to complete what was begun a year ago.
c) To the work
i) It would require work.
ii) But it can be done.
d) A completion out of what you have

This is logical. It would be an embarrassment to the Corinthian Church to leave the project unfinished. It was well within the ability of the Corinthians to complete their intended project! If the Macedonian churches could give out of their poverty, how much more the Corinthian church which was far wealthier!
