"Their minds were blinded..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 3:14

SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS

Even a casual reading of the Book of Exodus would reveal a startling fact. The children of Israel suffered from spiritual blindness!

“But their minds were blinded.
For until this day the same veil remains unlifted
in the reading of the Old Testament,
because the veil is taken away in Christ.”
2 Corinthians 3:14

1. “But their minds were blinded”

a) Spiritual blindness involves the mind rather than the eyes.
b) The children of Israel seemed to be able to comprehend the significance of what God had done for the nation.
i) They had been delivered from bondage in Egypt.
ii) God had shown them many mighty miracles.
iii) There should have been great faith in a wonderful God, but there wasn’t.
iv) Instead, the children of Israel kept grumbling and complaining throughout the wilderness journey.

2. “Until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament”

a) A play on words.
b) The word “veil” was a literal veil that was used to cover the shining face of Moses.
c) The word “veil” was used as a metaphor to explain why Israel continued to be spiritually blind.
d) The reading of the Old Testament
i) There should have been enlightenment.
ii) There should have been good comprehension.
iii) But the fact was that the readers just could not comprehend what they read from the Scriptures.

3. “The veil is taken away in Christ”

a) Spiritual blindness can only be dealt with by the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) As long as there isn’t any faith in Christ, the veil of blindness remained.
c) The challenge was to find faith in Christ Jesus, then would the Scripture be fully comprehended.

4. The term “Christ”

a) The word means “The Anointed One”.
b) The equivalent is the word “Messiah”.
c) Jesus is none other than the Christ (The Anointed One).

This understanding is of great significance in the growth of faith and understanding!
