"Ministers of the new covenant..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 3:6

THE OLD COVENANT MINISTRY

In the Old Covenant ministry, the following were the servants of God.

1. The priests and the Levites

2. The kings

3. The prophets

These were the three groups of “shepherds” God raised up to look after His people! Unfortunately, Israel, His people, failed to walk in the ways of the Lord. They rejected His word and turned their hearts to worship idols! In the Lord’s grace and mercy, He promised that He would bring forth a New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34).

THE NEW COVENANT

It was the Lord Jesus who proclaimed that He was establishing the New Covenant.

“For this is My blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
Matthew 26:28

THE NEW COVENANT MINISTRY

Paul wrote of his consciousness that he was a minister of God in the context of the new covenant.

“Who also made us sufficient as ministers of
the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit;
for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”
2 Corinthians 3:6

1. “Who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant”

a) It was God who enabled them to be sufficient as His ministers (servants).
b) The new order (that is, the New Covenant had come).
c) The old set of servants was being replaced with the new!
i) Apostles
ii) Evangelists
iii) Pastors-teachers (Ephesians 4:11)

2. The letter of the law

a) This is a reference to the Mosaic law.
b) The Law only served to highlight the problem of sin.
c) It could not give life.

3. Of the Spirit

a) This is a reference to the ministry of the New Covenant.
b) The Holy Spirit was vitally and deeply involved in ministry.
c) He gives life to those who would heed the word proclaimed by the ministers of the New Covenant.
