"Reaffirm your love..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 2:8

REAFFIRMATION OF LOVE

Paul taught much on the doctrine of Love. He certainly practised what he taught.

“Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.
For to this end I also wrote,
that I might put you to the test,
whether you are obedient in all things.”
2 Corinthians 2:8-9

1. “Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him”

a) “I urge you”
i) This may be translated “I beseech you”.
ii) The idea of bringing comfort is in mind (2 Corinthians 1; the word “consolation” is employed here).
b) “To reaffirm your love to him”
i) The call here is to put things into action.
ii) Paul urged the Corinthians to comfort and assure the repentant brother as he returns to the church.
iii) Love must not remain an abstract idea but must become “concrete”.

2. “For to this end I also wrote”

a) Paul had written with a specific goal in mind.
b) The goal was to encourage the brethren to
i) Discipline the erring brother.
ii) Restore him when he has shown fruits of repentance.

3. “That I might put you to the test”

a) Paul wanted the Corinthians to prove themselves well.
b) The test results must show that they had understood all that they had read from Paul’s letters.
c) The test was:
i) To discipline the erring brother.
ii) To restore him to full fellowship in the church at the appropriate time.

4. “Whether you are obedient in all things”

a) The test was essentially “obedience”.
b) Would they heed what Paul had written as an apostle of the Lord?
c) The Corinthians must seek to prove themselves obedient to the Lord in all things.
