"In weariness and toil..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 11:27

ANOTHER PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

Paul shared another personal perspective that is not always found in the other Epistles he wrote.

“In weariness and toil,
in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst,
in fastings often, in cold and nakedness-”
2 Corinthians 11:27

1. “In weariness and toil”

a) Toil
i) Paul was essentially a pioneer missionary.
ii) The word “toil” may be taken both figuratively and literally.
b) Weariness
i) Sometimes, Paul had to labour as a tent-maker to support himself.
ii) On top of the physical work, he preached the gospel.
iii) He founded churches as well.
iv) He admitted to feeling weary at times.

2. “In sleeplessness often”

a) That sleep does not always come is easily understood.
b) The following things would threaten sound sleep:
i) Pain (after having been brutally beaten)
ii) Danger from enemies
iii) Worries about life and ministry challenges

3. “In hunger and thirst”

a) Some mission fields were more challenging than others.
b) Some included physical privations (lack of basic food and water!).
c) Being incarcerated in the days of Paul could bring about hunger and thirst.

4. “In fastings often”

a) This was something that Paul chose to do.
b) He would face some of the perils with fastings often!

5. “In cold and nakedness”

a) These would be faced in some extremely difficult mission fields.
b) The lack of support from churches would sharply heighten this problem.
