"To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 10:16

THE PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL

It was the Lord Jesus Christ who gave the Great Commission to His disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). Paul took this commandment seriously and thus he made it a point to preach the Gospel everywhere.

“To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you,
And not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.”
2 Corinthians 10:16

1. “To preach the gospel”

a) This was ever Paul’s goal.
b) This was done in obedience to the Lord.
c) The content of the Gospel was always the Cross of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:18).
d) It was indeed the power of salvation!

2. A quick review of Paul’s preaching ministry

a) Paul began his first missionary journey with Barnabas and John Mark.
b) Salamis
They were focused on preaching the gospel (Acts 13:5).
c) Paphos
The teaching of the Lord’s word drew Sergius Paulus to faith (Acts 13:7, 12).
d) Antioch, Pisidia
Paul boldly preached the forgiveness of sins through Christ (Acts 13:14-52).
e) Iconium-Lystra-Derbe
Though there was strong opposition, Paul continued to teach (Acts 14:1-23).
f) Paul made two other missionary journeys (recorded in the book of Acts).

3. “In the regions beyond you”

a) Paul’s ministry was essentially in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire.
b) His heart’s desire was to preach in the Western part of the Empire, beginning in Rome.

4. “And not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment”

a) Paul was aware of the ministries of the other Apostles.
b) However, he would not boast in the accomplishment of others.

AN IMPORTANT CROSS REFERENCE

Paul wrote about glorying in his ministry to the Roman Church (Romans 15:15-21).

1. He was conscious of the grace of the Lord in his ministry to the Gentiles.

2. The Lord was with him, enabling him to perform mighty signs and wonders.

3. He preached from Jerusalem to Illyricum, making sure that he would not build on another man’s foundations.
