"Grace to you..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:2

GREETINGS APPRECIATED AFRESH

It is usual to greet people when we meet them face to face, or when we write to them. Sometimes, this became so “standard” that we fail to recognise the significance of “greetings”.

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
2 Corinthians 1:2

1. “Grace to you and peace”

a) Grace was a significant theological word in Paul’s vocabulary
i) It is through grace we are saved.
ii) It is through grace we are justified.
iii) It is through grace that the gifts of God are given.
iv) It is through grace that we are made strong for life and ministry.
b) Peace was not just a platitude.
i) It comes from the application of saving grace in our life.
ii) It results from a reconciled and restored relationship with God.
iii) It is a blessing we may have from God as we seek Him in prayer.
iv) It is a blessing that must not be taken for granted.

2. The use of a Co-ordinate Conjunction

a) The conjunction “and” was used significantly.
b) Grammarians speak of this as a “coordinate conjunction” in this context.
c) A conjunction joins two nouns together.
d) In this case, “God our Father” and “The Lord Jesus Christ”.

3. Significance

a) Grace and peace come from both God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) The idea of “coordinate conjunction”.
i) Father and Son are equals.
ii) Both can give “grace and peace”.

GOD AND THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

This is a profound theological concept. The Scriptures consistently maintain this teaching!

1. God is easily understood as “The Father”.

Few have difficulty in understanding and appreciating God as “Father”.

2. The challenging part is to comprehend how the Lord Jesus Christ is equal to God and is able to give grace and peace
