COMMUNICATION

Communication in the first century was very limited. The following were the usual means: –

1. By letter

2. Through couriers

3. Personal contact was rather limited

4. It would sometimes take months before a letter arrives at the destination

PAUL’S TRAVEL PLANS

Paul had to explain some of his travel plans to the Corinthian church in this text.

“And in this confidence I intended to come to you before,
that you might have a second benefit-
to pass by way of you to Macedonia,
to come again from Macedonia to you,
and be helped by you on my way to Judea.”
2 Corinthians 2:15-16

1. “And in this confidence I intended to come to you before”

a) Confidence
i) As part of Paul’s plans.
ii) This was what he had factored in.
b) Intended
i) This was what Paul wished to do.
ii) Visiting Corinth was in his plans.

2. “That you might have a second benefit”

a) The word “benefit” is derived from the word “grace”.
b) Paul was conscious of the fact that all he did was a result of God’s grace in operation.
c) He sought to benefit those to whom he ministered.

3. Paul’s busy ministry

a) To pass through Corinth to Macedonia.
b) To return to Corinth after ministry in Macedonia.
c) To be in Corinth so that the Church may help him on his way to ministry in Judea.
d) The significance of this explanation.
i) He thought of the Corinthians.
ii) The Corinthians mattered to Paul.
He had every intention to spend time with the church.
