"And having food and clothing..."

Text: 1 Timothy 6:8

THE PRACTICE OF GODLY CONTENTMENT

Godly contentment is not easy to possess. Nevertheless it is a worthwhile goal to pursue.

“And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.”
1 Timothy 6:8

1. Basic essentials

a) Food
b) Clothing

 

2. “With these we shall be content”

a) Many have these basic needs met.
b) Few are truly content.
c) It takes godliness to find true contentment.

 

THE TEACHINGS OF THE LORD JESUS

The apostle Paul mentioned the teachings of the Lord Jesus in a previous text (1 Timothy 6:3). It is good to note what Jesus taught concerning this subject (Matthew 6:25-34).

1. The worries of life

a) Jesus addressed the problem that many had.
b) Many “worry” about possessing even the basic things of this world (Matthew 6:25, 28, 31).

 

2. Faith in God

a) As the Heavenly Father (Matthew 6:26).
b) As One who will not fail to provide (Matthew 6:28-30).
c) Exercising of faith in God.
d) Overcome the tendency to worry.

 

3. Seeking God

a) A challenge to put God first in life.
b) The greater significance:-
i) Seeking God
ii) Seeking God’s kingdom
iii) Seeking righteousness

 

4. Assurance

God will meet our basic needs in life! He will not fail His children who trust Him!
