"From such withdraw yourself"

Text: 1 Timothy 6:5

FURTHER INSIGHTS

The apostle Paul minced no words when he described those who taught differently. They posed a hazard to the church.

“Useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and
destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness
is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.”
1 Timothy 6:5

1. “Useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds”

a) “Useless wranglings”
i) The word “wrangling” simply means “constant quarrelling”.
ii) It is considered “useless” because it is unproductive.
b) “Men of corrupt minds”
i) The minds of these people are “corrupt”.
ii) The word employed describes a person who is depraved.
iii) Yet he persists in arguing.
c) “Destitute of the truth”
i) The word “destitute” describes a person who has missed the point.
ii) Thus he has little knowledge of the truth.

2. A huge error highlighted

a) “Who suppose that godliness is a means of gain”
b) What is “godliness”?
i) It is holiness.
ii) It describes a person who loves a life of righteousness.
c) Godliness and gain
i) The truly godly person will not make merchandise of his godliness.
ii) Godliness cannot be marketed as a means of obtaining material gain.

3. An important response

a) Timothy must “withdraw himself”.
b) He cannot endorse such people.
c) He cannot be in fellowship with these men of corrupt minds or risk being adversely affected.
