"Guard what was committed to your trust..."

Text: 1 Timothy 6:20

DILIGENT GUARDING OF THE FAITH

The apostle Paul ended his first epistle to his beloved son on a strong and sober note.

“O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust,
avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions
of what is falsely called knowledge-
by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.
Grace be with you. Amen.”
1 Timothy 6:20-21

1. “O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust”

What was committed to Timothy’s trust? The following things may be highlighted:-

a) The glorious gospel
i) Paul spoke of this as something entrusted to him (1 Timothy 1:11).
ii) This gospel was also entrusted to Timothy.
iii) Sometimes the Gospel is generally referred to as “knowledge” (1 Timothy 2:4).
b) The faith
i) To abandon the faith was to court shipwreck (1 Timothy 1:19).
ii) This faith must also be employed in spiritual battle (1 Timothy 1:18).
c) The church of God
i) Specifically, the church at Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3).
ii) Generally, the church of the Lord at large (by way of application).

2. Things to avoid assiduously

a) What is falsely called knowledge.
b) A few things were mentioned in particular here.
i) Profane and idle babblings
ii) Contradictions

3. What happens when people profess false knowledge?

a) They stray from the faith.
b) They endanger their souls and those they may influence.

GRACE BE WITH YOU. AMEN.

The first epistle of the apostle Paul ended on a clear note of depending on the grace of the Lord. Paul himself had found the grace of the Lord in salvation and service! He now wished Timothy the same grace of God through which he would find strength and success in life and ministry.
