"Let them do good..."

Text: 1 Timothy 6:18

GOOD AND SOUND ADVICE

The apostle Paul gave good and sound advice to those who are wealthy. These words of advice transcend time!

“Let them do good, that they be rich in good works,
ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves
a good foundation for the time to come,
that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
1 Timothy 6:18-19

1. “Let them do good”

Three things were highlighted. The wealthy are especially poised to do these things!

a) “Be rich in good works”
i) To be rich is one thing.
ii) To be rich in good works is another.
b) “Ready to give”
i) The challenge is to have a heart that is willing to give.
ii) And when the opportunity arises to actually give.
c) “Willing to share”
i) Sharing is something that can and must be learned.
ii) There must be a sense of community.
iii) We cannot but want to share with those who are in need in the community.

2. “Storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come”

a) There are wonderful ramifications.
b) Those who do good works are in fact laying “a good foundation”.
i) For the future.
ii) Who knows what blessings lie ahead for those who use their wealth wisely and well?

3. “That they may lay hold on eternal life”

a) This does not mean that the wealthy earn eternal life.
b) Eternal life is given by grace to all who believe in the Lord (Ephesians 2:8-9).
c) Those who practise their faith by doing good works are said to have laid “hold on eternal life”.
d) They will “enjoy so much more” the eternal life that the Lord has given. They will be blessed by those whose lives are touched by their good works!
