"Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine..."

Text: 1 Timothy 4:16

TAKING PROPER HEED

Sometimes a younger person may become careless or may take things for granted. The apostle Paul counselled Timothy to ensure that these situations never happen.

“Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.
Continue in them, for in doing this you will save
both yourself and those who hear you.”

1 Timothy 4:16

1. “Take heed”

a) This is imperative.
b) Nothing must ever be taken for granted.
c) This must be done diligently and continuously.

2. Two areas highlighted

a) Self
i) The heart must be guarded.
ii) The mind must take heed of dangers.
iii) The activities of life must be watched carefully too.
b) Doctrine
i) Mastery of knowledge must be a goal.
ii) Doctrine must never be compromised or corrupted.

3. “Continue in them”

The beneficiaries are obvious:-

a) Self
i) One can be lost through error and sin.
ii) To continue to be diligent and faithful will result in great benefit to self.
iii) The individual will be saved from error.
iv) He will be saved from the consequences that result from error.
b) “Those who hear”
i) This is a reference to the people who were shepherded by Timothy.
ii) There could be a wider reference to those Timothy would reach (potentially).
iii) Those who have a diligent and faithful pastor will be saved from error and sin.
