"Meditate on these things..."

Text: 1 Timothy 4:15

SOUND ADVICE

What will enable a person to become a faithful and fruitful servant of God? The advice given by the apostle Paul was truly sound. Given proper attention the individual can become a significant servant of God.

“Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them,
that your progress may be evident to all.”

1 Timothy 4:15

1. “Meditate on these things”

a) “These things”
i) A general reference to all that Paul had taught Timothy.
ii) A specific reference to the immediate things that Paul had written to him in this context (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
b) “Meditate”
i) The first reference is to give sufficient thought.
ii) A related reference is to practise what has been thought through.

2. “Give yourself entirely to them”

a) “To them”

This is a reminder of all that Paul had instructed Timothy on.

b) “Give yourself entirely”
i) This phrase is an attempt to express an imperative word.
ii) A literal translation is virtually impossible.
iii) The NKJV translators have translated well.
iv) The heart and mind must be immersed in understanding and practising the things that were taught.

3. “That your progress may be evident to all”

a) “Your progress”
i) This is a reference to the external.
ii) Meditation is the internal.
iii) If there is indeed true understanding there will be external expressions.
b) “May be evident to all”
i) The word “evident” may also be translated “manifested”.
ii) Progress is something that would be obvious to all.
