"For kings and all who are in authority..."

Text: 1 Timothy 2:2

A CALL TO INTERCEDE

It is all too common to see people complaining and griping about the government. The apostle Paul’s approach is totally different. He urges Timothy to teach the church to pray for those who rule the land.

“For kings and all who are in authority,
that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life
in all godliness and reverence.”

1 Timothy 2:2

1. The word “for”

a) This is a preposition.
b) Literally translated, it means “on behalf of”.
c) This word was used in the earlier verse- “for all men”.
d) This is a continuation of the idea of praying for people in 1 Timothy 2:1.

2. “For kings and all who are in authority”

a) “For kings”
i) There were many monarchs in ancient days.
ii) Many kings were actually despots.
iii) Prayer was enjoined.
b) “And all who are in authority”
i) These may be people who assist the king in ruling the country.
ii) These could be governors, judges etc.
iii) They are to be prayed for.

3. Desired results

a) That we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and reverence.
b) This is something that is truly to be most desired.
c) Prayer is seen as instrumental for these desired results

4. Quality of life

a) This is not to be taken for granted.
b) Significant Features:-
i) Many of these features are missing in so many countries the world over.
ii) Our challenge is to truly believe that it is our Christian duty to pray for our leaders.
