"Nor give heed to fables..."

Text: 1 Timothy 1:4

OTHER DOCTRINES

The false teachers in the first century were adept at propagating erroneous teachings. They offered “other doctrines”.

1. These may contain some elements of truth thus they appear to be good teachings.

2. But they are often laced with error.

3. These half-truths were especially dangerous to those who were weak and poorly taught.

OTHER THREATS

The false teachers did not stop at promoting “other doctrines.” The following text highlights some of the things taught erroneously.

“Nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies,
which cause disputes rather than godly edification
which is in faith.”
1 Timothy 1:4

1. “Fables”

a) These appeal to people who are inclined towards stories.
b) The stories they weave and share with others may not be the truth but are mere “fables”.

2. “Endless genealogies”

a) Genealogies often offer fascinating insights.
b) Many are the stories that may be told.
c) Genealogies can be very time and energy consuming!

3. Terrible results

a) These can cause disputes.
b) And Church disputes can create schism in the Body of Christ.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE FOCUS OF THE CHURCH?

Paul highlighted the things that the Church should focus on. Two things are highlighted!

1. “Godly edification”

a) Members are to be encouraged.
b) Many who are spiritually fed built up their faith.

2. Appreciation of the blessing of faith

a) Through faith many blessings may be received.
b) The word of God and our “faith” go together closely.
