"This is a faithful saying..."

Text: 1 Timothy 1:15

A GLORIOUS ETERNAL TRUTH

In the Pastoral epistle the apostle used the phrase, “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance” very effectively. This is the first use of this phrase. It is to depict a glorious eternal truth.

“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance,
that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,
of whom I am chief.”

1 Timothy 1:15

1. “This is a faithful saying”

This saying (literally “word”) reflected a glorious truth. Further analysis of this statement would yield the following thoughts:-

a) It is an eternal truth.

b) It is a universal truth.

c) It is certainly a Biblical truth.

2. “And worthy of all acceptance”

This is the second part of this statement of truth. This statement is well-balanced. It focuses on how it may be received.

a) It is a truth that may be received easily.

b) It is not difficult to comprehend.

c) It commends itself readily.

3. “That Christ Jesus came into world to save sinners”

a) There were many other reasons why Christ came into the world.

b) Some of the reasons are quite complex.

c) Three may be highlighted as examples:-

i) He came to restore Israel back to God (Romans 9-11).

ii) He came to establish a New Covenant (Hebrews 8-10).

iii) He came to be our great High Priest (Hebrews 4-7).

d) However the clearest and most easily understood truth was that He came to save sinners.

4. “Of whom I am chief”

a) Paul applied this truth to himself.

b) He could not imagine someone who had sinned as grievously as he had.

c) Yet the mercy, grace, faith and love of God and the Lord Jesus reached even him.

d) Anyone can find full salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ and be wonderfully redeemed.
