"God did not appoint us to wrath..."

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:9

SPARED FROM THE WRATH OF GOD

How wonderful it is to know and be assured that when we receive salvation in Christ, we have indeed been spared from the wrath of God!

“For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation
through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether
we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.”

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

1. “For God did not appoint us to wrath”

a) It is appointed that man will die and after that Judgment (Hebrews 9:27).
b) However this general truth only applies to those who do not have salvation.
c) God’s judgment is to be feared for He would have to judge mankind for sin.
d) The wrath of God
i) This is forewarned.
ii) This is well-exemplified in many Old Testament texts.
e) For those who belong to Christ we do not have to fear judgment.
f) We are not appointed to wrath.

2. “But to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ”

a) We are saved from the wrath of God.
b) We have been given salvation through faith in Christ.

3. “Who died for us”

a) Jesus took the penalty of our sins upon Himself.
b) He died vicariously for us.
c) Salvation in Christ effectively spares us from the wrath of God.

4. “We should live together with Him”

a) Whether we live.
b) Whether we die (“sleep”).
c) We are inextricably linked to Christ Jesus our Lord.
d) To be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8).
e) God has given us a strong and solid guarantee when He sealed us with the Spirit (2 Corinthians 5:5).
