Day 53

"Let us watch and be sober."

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:6

AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE

How should we prepare ourselves to await the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ? The apostle Paul put forward these challenging thoughts.

“You are all sons of light and sons of the day.
We are not of the night nor of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do,
but let us watch and be sober.”

1 Thessalonians 5:5-6

1. “Sons of light and sons of the day”

a) This is a clear description of what Christians are.
b) We are children of God.
i) Sons of light walk in the light of His truth.
ii) Sons of the day walk in His righteousness.

2. “We are not of the night nor of darkness”

a) This is offered as a strong contrast.
b) We are not of the night nor darkness and thus we do not remain in the power of darkness.

3. “Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do”

a) We should not be “sleeping” believers.
b) We should be alive and actively serving the Lord.
c) Sadly Paul had to address the fact that there were believers whom he described as “sleeping”.
i) Inactivity is in mind.
ii) Indolence is also in mind.

4. “Let us watch and be sober”

a) Watching is:-
i) Being alert.
ii) Being fully conscious.
b) Being sober is:-
i) Not being caught up in drunken revelry.
ii) Fully aware that we should live as sons of light and sons of the day.
iii) Living responsibly in anticipation of the Second Coming of Christ.
