"Peace and safety!"

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:3

COMMON MISTAKES

Many are the common mistakes made by those who try and predict the Second Coming of Christ.

“For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’
then sudden destruction comes upon them,
as labour pains upon a pregnant woman.
And they shall not escape.
But you, brethren, are not in darkness,
so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.”

1 Thessalonians 5:3-4

1. “For when they say, ‘Peace and safety'”

a) Some predict that life on earth will progress smoothly.
b) Some believe that there will be “peace and safety” before the Return of Christ.
c) There is no Biblical basis for this belief.

2. “Then sudden destruction comes upon them”

a) The fate of the future of the world is impossible to predict.
b) One day there may be “peace and safety” and the next day could see “sudden destruction”.
c) It is not wise to predicate the Second Coming of Christ on any theory.

3. “As labour pains upon a pregnant woman”

a) Labour pains could be unpredictable.
b) No one knows exactly when the labour pains may start.
c) But that there will be labour pains is a foregone conclusion.

4. “They shall not escape”

a) There is no escape of “pain”.
b) This is a solemn reality and reminder.

5. “But you, brethren, are not in darkness”

a) The darkness represents “ignorance”.
b) The theories predicting the time of the Second Coming of Christ must be rejected.

6. “So that this Day should overtake you as a thief”

a) Christ’s Return is to be anticipated.
b) We should not be caught unprepared when He returns as a thief in the night.
