"Now the people of God"

Text: 1 Peter 2:10

THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT ISRAEL

The ministry of the Apostle Peter was primarily among the Jews. Understandably, he would make frequent references to the Scriptures.

“Who once were not a people but are now the people of God,
who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.”
1 Peter 2:10

1. A reference to Hosea

a) This text may not have been cited as a Biblical reference.
b) But it is a text from Hosea 2:23.
c) The full context in Hosea 1.
i) Israel sinned so grievously against God.
ii) The nation chose to worship many idols.
iii) God declared that He would not show mercy to Israel (Hosea 1:6-7).
iv) God would not acknowledge Israel as His people (Hosea 1:8-10).

2. The prophecy of God redeeming His people

a) God would once again show mercy to His people (Hosea 2:23).
b) He would also regard Israel as His people (Hosea 2:23).

3. Application of the prophecy

a) Peter applied this prophetic word to his readers.
b) Those who had been born again.
i) They had received God’s mercy.
ii) God was relating to them as His people.

4. The salvation that God offers

a) This displays His great mercy.
b) Those who are saved are regarded as God’s redeemed people.
