"An inheritance incorruptible and undefiled"

Text: 1 Peter 1:4

AN INHERITANCE FROM GOD

Salvation in itself is a glorious gift from God. But there is more that God has planned for the heirs of salvation.

“To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled
and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.”
1 Peter 1:4

1. Important constructions to note in 1 Peter 1:3,4

a) To a living hope 1 Peter 1:3

b) To an inheritance 1 Peter 1:4

c) Both statements make use of the preposition “to” or “into”.

d) Significance

i) The living hope is further explained as “an inheritance”.

ii) The “inheritance” is part of the living hope.

2. The word “inheritance”

a) It is actually derived from a word which means “chosen”.

b) Believers are the chosen ones of God.

c) They are also called “the elect”.

d) All who are chosen are given an inheritance, as part and parcel of the concept.

3. A brief description of the inheritance

Three qualities were highlighted:

a) It is “incorruptible”.

i) The word “corruptible” is not to be understood with the word “corruption”.

ii) It really means, “immortal” or “imperishable”.

b) It is “undefiled”

i) It means “pure”.

ii) It is “untainted”.

c) It “does not fade away”.

i) It is “everlasting”.

ii) It does not diminish with the passing of time.

4. Who is looking after our inheritance?

a) It is “reserved in heaven”.
The word “reserved” means “kept” or “protected”.

b) The Lord Himself has been keeping this inheritance as our Father in heaven.

c) Thus, this inheritance will always be especially kept.

5. What is this “inheritance?”

a) Our home in heaven

b) Our sonship (heirs of God)

c) Our living hope

d) Our salvation

e) Our souls

These blessings are not to be taken for granted. The earthly blessings cannot compare with the heavenly and eternal ones!
