"Sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ"

Text: 1 Peter 1:2c

THE PORTRAITS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

The Gospel writers sought to portray the Lord Jesus in so many different ways. Each writer had his own perspective and appreciation of the Saviour.

1. Matthew

Matthew sought to portray Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of David (Matthew 1:1, 16, 17).

2. Mark

Mark wrote to show how Jesus was none other than the Son of God (Mark 1:1).

3. Luke

Luke sought to portray Jesus as the Son of Man who had come to save the lost (Luke 19:10).

4. John

John sought to highlight Jesus as the Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29, 36).

PETER’S CONSCIOUSNESS

Peter did not write a Gospel. But he was nevertheless conscious of the work of the Lord Jesus as Saviour.

“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,
in sanctification of the Spirit,
for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be multiplied.”
1 Peter 1:2

1. The role of God the Father

The plan of salvation involved perfect knowledge; foreknowledge was one aspect highlighted.

2. The role of the Holy Spirit

His work involved sanctification. He continues to sanctify our hearts and minds every day.

3. The role of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) His role was a very painful and difficult one.
b) His blood had to be shed.
i) Only through the shedding of His blood could atonement be made.
ii) Only through His blood could forgiveness be obtained.
iii) He was indeed the perfect Lamb of God who could see to the removal of the guilt of our sins.
c) The sprinkling of the blood:
i) In the giving of the Covenant to Israel, blood was sprinkled (Exodus 24)
ii) The sprinkling of the blood was on the altar of worship (Exodus 24:6).
iii) It was also sprinkled on the people who were there to witness the giving of the covenant (Exodus 24:8).
iv) The sprinkling of the blood sealed the covenant between God and Israel (Exodus 24:8).
d) The sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
i) It represented the forgiveness of sins.
ii) It also represented the sealing of the New Covenant that He gave (Matthew 26:28).
