"The word of God which lives and abides forever"

Text: 1 Peter 1:24

A COMPARISON

Being finite, it is not always easy to comprehend that which is eternal. Peter made a useful and good comparison.

“Because
‘All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.
The grass withers,
And its flower falls away,
But the word of the LORD endures forever.’
Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you”
1 Peter 1:24-25

1. Earthly glory

a) “Flesh”

i) Man is made of flesh.

ii) The life span of flesh is compared to mere “grass”.

b) “The glory of man”

i) In life, man may achieve some glory through some great accomplishments.

ii) But man’s glory is compared to the flower of the grass.

ii) The grass soon withers away.

iii) The flower also falls away.

c) The Lord Jesus compared Solomon’s glory to the glory of grass (Matthew 6:29).

i) Solomon’s glory could not compare to the natural glory of the lilies of the field, or even the grass that grew naturally.

ii) Their glory soon fades away and it is gone.

2. “The word of the LORD endures forever”

a) The contrast is stark and obvious.

b) All earthly things are ephemeral.

i) They do not last.

ii) They have no eternal value.

c) The nature of the word of the Lord:

i) The “word” here refers to the spoken word of God.

ii) Even if the word is just a spoken word, it will endure forever.

3. “Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you”

a) The word of the gospel:

i) It was preached by the Apostles.

ii) It was proclaimed by many.

b) This word is of great value and significance.

i) It is the word of the Lord.

ii) It abides forever.
