"Purified your souls"

Text: 1 Peter 1:22

THE PURIFIED SOUL

The salvation that God gives reaches to the realm of our soul. God’s redemption plan is deep and wondrous.

“Since you have purified your souls
in obeying the truth through the Spirit
in sincere love of the brethren,
love one another fervently with a pure heart.”
1 Peter 1:22

1. “Since you have purified your souls”

a) The human being is made up of two parts:
i) The body
ii) The soul
b) Purification
i) This is a deep and profound word.
ii) The soul has been purified (Perfect participle).
iii) We stand before God as souls that have been purified.
iv) This is part and parcel of our redemption/ salvation.

2. “In obeying the truth”

a) The practical ramifications are to be seen in our obedience.
i) Our calling is in part described by the word “obedience” (1 Peter 1:2).
ii) It is expressed further when we practise being “obedient children” (1 Peter 1:14).
b) What do we obey?
i) The truth
ii) The word of God

3. “Through the Spirit”

a) The Spirit of God is wonderfully involved.
b) He will help us practise obedience as God’s true children.

4. Love as the hallmark of our faith

a) “In sincere love of the brethren”
i) The phrase “love for the brethren” describes the kind of love we are supposed to have.
ii) It is actually a noun (though it sounds like a verbal clause in English).
iii) This love must be marked by “sincerity” (not hypocritical).
b) “Love one another fervently with a pure heart”
i) This is the expression of “love-for-the-brethren” kind of affection.
ii) The heart being purified is able to love in this manner.
iii) The challenge is to put into action this special affection.
iv) The adverb was written correctly… This love must be exercised “fervently”.
