"Keep yourselves from idols."

Text: 1 John 5:21

A GLORIOUS AND PRECIOUS FAITH

In 1 John, the Apostle John captured the heart of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many wonderful and practical truths were touched on.

1. We may speak of God as our Father.

2. We may speak of Jesus as :-

a) Our Saviour
b) Our Propitiation
c) Our Advocate

3. We may speak of the Holy Spirit:-

a) As our Anointing.
b) As One who abides in us.

4. We may speak of having:-

a) Eternal life
b) Fellowship with God

5. We may speak of our sins:-

a) As being forgiven.
b) We stand washed and cleansed through the blood of Jesus.

6. We may speak of being unafraid of the Wicked One

a) He who dwells in us is stronger than he who is in the world.
b) The wicked one cannot touch us if we keep ourselves in the Lord.

THE PROBLEM OF IDOLATRY

The Apostle John must have been familiar with the history of ancient Israel. Idolatry had destroyed the nation. Thus in closing he wrote these words.

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”
1 John 5:21

1. “Little children”

This phrase reflects the deep affection John had in his heart for his readers.

2. “Keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”

a) The danger of straying into idolatry must be warned against!
b) The responsibility in doing this lies with the believer! God has wonderfully blessed and provided in and through the Lord Jesus Christ! The believer must determine to worship the Lord God alone!
