"Now this is the confidence that we have in Him..."

Text: 1 John 5:14

CONFIDENT OF OUR FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

The Apostle John wanted dearly his beloved readers to be confident in their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ! To be plagued by doubt would be miserable!

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him,
that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
1 John 5:14

1. “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him”

a) It is so important that our faith in the Lord gives us a sense of confidence.
b) This verse complements the previous one.
c) Our faith is in the name of the Lord Jesus.
d) Our confidence is in His being the Son of God.
e) John wrote to boost the confidence of his readers in the Lord Jesus Christ.

i) Assurance

2. “That if we ask anything according to His will”

a) John knew that some of his readers had trouble in believing in the name of the Lord Jesus.
b) This led to the problem of not praying with any great confidence about offering prayers.

IMPORTANT BASIC UNDERSTANDING ABOUT PRAYER

In this short text, John highlights some very important features about praying.

1. The basis of our being able to pray at all.

a) It is centered in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God.
b) Through faith in the Lord we have eternal life as a glorious gift from God.

2. We are to pray with confidence (assurance and boldness).

a) In the name of the Lord Jesus.
b) We are to submit our prayers to the will of God.

3. We may be assured

a) That God our Father in heaven will hear our prayers.
b) Prayer is a precious privilege that God gives to all His children.
c) He will always hear the prayers of His beloved children for the sake of His beloved Son.
