"It is the Spirit who bears witness..."

Text: 1 John 5:6

YET ANOTHER WITNESS

The Apostle John added the Holy Spirit as yet another witness of the identity of Jesus as the Christ.

“And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.”
1 John 5:6

1. “And it is the Spirit who bears witness”

a) John makes a bold declaration that he believes that the Spirit of God Himself bore witness.
b) He saw the Spirit of God descend on Jesus at His baptism.
c) John was one of the disciples of John the Baptiser.
d) He heard clearly what the Baptiser said about the Spirit of God (John 1:29-34).
i) “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.”
ii) “This is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit”
iii) “I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
e) The significance of the Spirit of God coming upon Jesus includes the following: –
i) Anointing
ii) Empowering
iii) Confirming
iv) Bearing witness

2. The teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ concerning the Holy Spirit

a) All the gospel writers wrote about the Person and ministry of the Holy Spirit.
b) John carefully recorded what Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit (John 14-16).

3. The baptism of the Holy Spirit

a) All the apostles were baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4).
b) They experienced the filling of the Spirit of God (Acts 2:4).

4. “Because the Spirit is truth”

a) One of the attributes of the Spirit of God is “truth”.
b) This was identified by Jesus as He taught His disciples (John 14:17).
c) Through John’s personal experience with the Spirit of God he understands why He is called the Spirit of truth.
d) John now applies this attribute of the Holy Spirit as a special witness of Jesus as the Christ.
