"Everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him..."

Text: 1 John 5:1

2LOVING THE LORD

It should be natural to speak of loving the Lord who has begotten us. This is the truth that John persisted in saying in his epistle.

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God,
and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him
who is begotten of Him.”
1 John 5:1

1. “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God”

a) Believing that Jesus is the Christ involves an act that is deep and profound.
b) The Holy Spirit is involved in this work.
c) John 3 records an encounter between Nicodemus and the Lord Jesus Christ.
i) Jesus taught Nicodemus what it means to be begotten of God.
ii) He needs to be born again.
iii) The Spirit of God will bring about this experience.
d) “Born of God”
i) This was John’s reference.
ii) The person who truly believes in the Lord is called “born of God”.

2. “And everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him”

a) The construction “whoever believes” may be translated “everyone who believes”.
b) We have a similar construction here, “everyone who loves”.
c) Hence we have a strong tie-up between the two.
i) He who believes.
ii) He who loves.
iii) They are not separate groups of people.
iv) The same person is described here.
v) It is natural to love the Lord who has begotten us. He is Father to us!

3. “Also loves him who is begotten of Him”

a) All who are truly born again should have this love for fellow-believers.
b) We share the same Father.
c) We are brethren and thus there should be that love for each other.
