"And we have seen and testify..."

Text: 1 John 4:14

A CONSISTENT TESTIMONY

The Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ were instructed to bear testimony for Him. John must have borne this word in mind for he was most consistent in bearing testimony.

“And we have seen and testify that the Father
has sent the Son as Saviour of the world.”
1 John 4:14

1. “And we have seen”

a) John began his epistle by saying that he had seen the Lord (1 John 1:1-2).
b) Once again he comments that he (and others) had seen the Lord Jesus.
c) He wrote as an eye-witness.

2. “And testify”

a) To testify was to go beyond just reporting what he had seen.
b) John now bore witness of his understanding of what he had seen.
c) To bear witness involves an intelligent appraisal of what he had seen about Jesus.

3. “That the Father has sent the Son”

a) This was a testimony about God whom John called “Father”.
b) The Father had sent Jesus.
i) Jesus was Son to God the Father.
ii) He was not just an ordinary person.
iii) John had known Jesus close up for a number of years.
iv) He saw how Jesus healed all who came to Him.
v) He heard what Jesus said to the multitudes and to His disciples.
vi) He was there when the Romans crucified Him.
vii) He had also seen the Risen Jesus.
c) “As Saviour of the world”
i) Jesus was more than a wonderful Son of God.
ii) He was sent to be the Saviour of the world.
iii) John wrote as one who had come to believe in Jesus as his Saviour.
iv) He bears witness consistently and with all his heart concerning Jesus as the Saviour of the world.
