Text: 1 John 3:24

SIGNIFICANCE OF KEEPING THE LORD’S COMMANDMENTS

What is the significance of keeping the Lord’s commandments? The Apostle John offers a deep insight as to the significance of keeping the Lord’s word.

“Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.
And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”
1 John 3:24

1. “Now he who keeps His commandments”

a) The true believer who loves the Lord will keep His commandments.
b) He will keep God’s commandments because of his faith in Him.
c) He will keep His commandments not because he wants his prayers to be answered.
d) He will faithfully continue to keep God’s commandments even if his petitions are denied.

2. The teaching about “abiding”

a) “Abides in Him”

We abide in the Lord when we are truly keeping His commandments faithfully.

b) We will be abiding
i) In Christ (John 15:4-5)
ii) In His word (John 15:7)
iii) In His love (John 15:9)
c) And He in us (John 15:5)

3. “By this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us”

a) This is a reference to the Holy Spirit.
i) He has been promised to us (John 14:16).
ii) He will dwell with us and be in us (John 14:17).
b) His abiding in us confirms that Christ is abiding in us.
i) The Spirit of God is our special anointing from the Lord (1 John 2:20).
ii) His presence in us represents Christ abiding in you (1 John 2:27).

THE LORD MAKING HIS HOME WITH US

How precious are these words of the Lord Jesus Christ! May we truly love our precious Saviour!

“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word;
And My Father will love him,
and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
John 14:23
