"Everyone who has this hope..."

Text: 1 John 3:3

A STRONG HOPE THAT MOTIVATES

The word “hope” is vital to human life. Without hope we would sink into total and utter despair. The Apostle John touched on this hope in the following text.

“And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself,
just as He is pure.”
1 John 3:3

1. “And everyone who has this hope in Him”

a) What is this hope?
i) It begins with knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) Faith is next.
iii) Hope follows closely.
b) Elements of “hope”
i) We can be like the Lord Jesus as we follow Him.
ii) We can think His thoughts.
iii) We can do His works.
iv) We can have His heart of love.
v) We can desire to do God’s will.
vi) We can reflect His holy character.
vii) We can become fishers of men.
viii) We can bear much fruit.

2. “Purifies himself just as He is pure”

a) What hinders us much is the problem of sin.
b) Hence there must be a strong desire to be cleansed from sin and its power.
c) The strong motivation is the hope that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.
i) We rid ourselves of the love for the world.
ii) We treasure our faith in the Lord.
iii) We revel in our being “children of God”.
iv) We seek to live as purely as possible.
d) Our focus is to be like the Lord Jesus Christ in all His purity.
