"Beloved, now we are children of God..."

Text: 1 John 3:2

REVELLING IN OUR BEING CHILDREN OF GOD

The Apostle John revelled in the thought of being called “children of God”. So much may be said about being God’s children.

“Beloved, now we are children of God;
and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be,
but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him,
for we shall see Him as He is.”
1 John 3:2

1. “Beloved”

a) This was written in the plural.
b) John was making a reference to all the children of God.

2. The practice of love

a) We are “beloved of God”.
b) It follows that we should learn how to speak the language of love.
c) John certainly practised this.
d) Evidence of John’s practice of love is obvious: –
i) He calls his readers, “little children” (1 John 2:28).
ii) He writes to them as his “beloved” (1 John 3:2).
iii) He wrote to encourage the practice of love (1 John 2:8-10).

3. “Now we are children of God”

a) There was a time when we were not children of God.
b) “Now” was used emphatically
i) To highlight the difference between the past and the present.
ii) To emphasise the current stage of being called “children of God”.

PRIVILEGES OF BEING CHILDREN OF GOD

Here are some privileges of being children of God that we must never take for granted! Four things may be highlighted: –

1. We may relate to God as our Father.

2. We have the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour and our great High Priest.

3. We have the Holy Spirit as our Seal, our Guarantee and much more.

4. We have assurance of eternal life in and through Christ Jesus our Lord.
