GOD'S GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Text: 1 John 2:27

GOD’S GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

One of the most significant and profound gifts of God surely has to be the Holy Spirit! He was given to all believers as a Seal that they truly are God’s children. The Spirit of God is the Guarantee that our salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life are truly secure!

THE ANOINTING

The Apostle John used the word “anointing” to highlight another aspect of the ministry of the Holy Spirit of God.

“But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you,
and you do not need that anyone teach you;
but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true,
and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.”
1 John 2:27

1. “But the anointing which you have received from Him”

a) This is a reference to the Holy Spirit of God.
b) This is a reference to what John the Baptiser taught: –
i) John spoke about the Person and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 3:11).
ii) He would baptise believers with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
iii) The word “fire” is an emblem of the Holy Spirit.
iv) The Lord Jesus would anoint all believers with the Holy Spirit.

2. “Abides in you”

a) Jesus had much to teach about the ministry of the Holy Spirit (John 14-16).
b) One of the great truths is that the Spirit of God will abide in the believer (John 14:16).
c) The Holy Spirit takes up residence in the believer permanently.

3. “And you do not need that anyone teach you”

a) This statement needs careful consideration.
b) It can be misunderstood badly.
c) What it does not mean: –
i) It does not mean we do not need human instructors.
ii) It does not mean we reject what God has graciously provided.

4. God’s gracious provision

a) He gave apostles, prophets and pastors/teachers.
b) Their role was obvious- to help believers to know their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
