"Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?"

Text: 1 John 2:22

A MAJOR TRUTH AT STAKE

The Apostle John was aware of the teachings of the false teachers. One of the things denied was that Jesus was the Christ!

“Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?
He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.”
1 John 2:22

1. Not a reference to those outside the faith

a) John was not writing about those who had not heard of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) These would not be able to discuss the doctrine of The Messiah (The Christ).

2. “Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ”

a) John’s context
i) He was writing about those who had been taught about Jesus.
ii) John’s Gospel was written to prove that Jesus was indeed the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31).
b) Denying that Jesus was indeed the Christ
i) John carefully recorded the teachings of Jesus concerning His identity (John 5).
ii) His miracles, The Scriptures, God Himself were witnesses that Jesus was The Christ.
iii) But those who had left were denying that Jesus was the Christ.
iv) John called them “liars”.

3. “He is antichrist”

a) John went further and called the person who denies this basic truth as an “antichrist”.
b) These were strong words indeed!

4. “Who denies the Father and the Son”

a) What else did these false teachers deny?
i) They denied God as Father.
ii) They denied Jesus as the Son of God.
b) Constant denial is in mind
i) These false brethren were currently and actively engaged in their work of denying God.
ii) This is understood when John used the Present Tense to describe them.
c) John was as strong in his resistance against these false teachers/ brethren.
