"You have heard that the Antichrist is coming..."

Text: 1 John 2:18

ΤHE DOCTRINE OF THE ANTICHRIST

One of the aspects in Eschatology has to do with the Antichrist. The Apostle John wrote on one perspective in the following text.

“Little children, it is the last hour;
and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming,
even now many antichrists have come,
by which we know that it is the last hour.”
1 John 2:18

1. “It is the last hour”

a) John used the Present Tense to affirm that it is “the last hour”.
b) He was not making a reference to the future but the very present.
c) The use of the phrase “last hour” highlights the urgency and the lateness of the hour.

2. “And as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming”

a) The teaching about the Antichrist was not a new teaching.
b) The Lord Jesus warned that there would be some who would speak of “Christ” in times of tribulation (Matthew 24:23).
c) The Apostle Paul wrote to warn about the Lawless One, another name for the Antichrist (2 Thessalonian 2:9).

3. Who is the “Antichrist”?

a) The word “Antichrist” has two elements we need to take note of.
i) The obvious element
This person will certainly be against Christ.
ii) A subtler element
This person is going to be one who would attempt “to take the place of Christ”.
He will seek to substitute the place of Christ!
b) Features of the Antichrist or The Lawless One (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10).
i) He will exhibit much power.
ii) But his power is from Satan.
iii) He will have power to perform “signs and lying wonders”.
iv) He will be able to deceive many.

4. “Even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour”

a) The actual Antichrist may not have emerged.
b) But there were many “antichrists” who had appeared and are already in the world.
