"But you were washed..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 6:11

REMEMBERING AND RETURNING TO GOD

Paul was not out to condemn the Corinthians! He sought to cause them to remember how they came to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was appealing to them to return to the Lord!

“And such were some of you.
But you were washed, but you were sanctified,
but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus
and by the Spirit of our God.”
1 Corinthians 6:11

1. “And such were some of you”

a) The list Paul wrote described the past of some of the Corinthians before they came to faith.
b) This was a sobering reality.

2. What it means to have inherited the kingdom of God

a) “Washed”
This has a strong idea of being cleansed thoroughly.
b) “Sanctified”
This is a reference to being “made holy”.
c) “Justified”
This is a reference to “imputed righteousness”.

3. Had the Corinthian believers understood all these things?

a) They should recall the roots of their salvation.
b) They should be moved to return to the Lord
i) Seeking forgiveness;
ii) Seeking cleansing;
iii) Seeking restoration; and
iv) Seeking to return to a life of following the Lord Jesus closely.

4. “In the name of the Lord Jesus”

a) His precious name was invoked.
b) Salvation was made possible only through His suffering and death on the cross for us.
c) Our blood-bought salvation must never be taken for granted.

5. “And by the Spirit of our God”

a) He was poured out on all true believers.
b) His ministry must not be taken for granted nor quenched. He applied the significance of Christ’s death into our lives effectively! His ministry is indispensable!
