"Which none of the rulers of this age knew..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 2:8

THE WISDOM OF THE WORLD

Leaders are supposed to possess wisdom. This is expected of them. However, it does not naturally follow that leaders are wise people!

“Which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known,
they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
1 Corinthians 2:8

1. “Which none of the rulers of this age knew”

a) This was a reference to the so-called spiritual rulers of Israel.
b) They belonged to what was known as the Sanhedrin Council.
i) There were scholars.
ii) There were wealthy people.
iii) There were people of great influence and might (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
c) The Council was responsible for:
i) The religious life of the nation.
ii) The moral life as well.
iii) However, they failed miserably (Matthew 23– the sound rebuke of the leaders).

2. “For had they known”

a) They could not understand what Jesus taught.
b) They rejected His teachings.
c) They resisted Him from start to finish.

3. “They would not have crucified the Lord of glory”

a) They did not recognise Jesus
i) As the Son of Man.
ii) As the Son of God.
iii) As the Messiah.
iv) As the Lord of glory.
b) Crucifying Jesus
i) They demanded the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) This was one of the worst ways for anyone to die (It would be a slow and agonising death).
