"We speak wisdom among those who are mature..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 2:6

WORDS OF WISDOM

Not everyone was enamoured of worldly wisdom. There were some who recognised the reason why Paul ministered the way he did.

“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature,
yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age,
who are coming to nothing.”
1 Corinthians 2:6

1. “However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature”

a) Words of wisdom
i) It is safe to say that Paul was a wise man.
ii) And consistent with that, he spoke words of wisdom.
b) Among those who are mature
i) The word “mature” in normal usage describes people who have reached physical maturity.
ii) They have passed childhood, youth, and are not adults.
iii) As mature adults, these are able to use their faculties effectively.

2. Wisdom across the ages:

Each era had its own “wisdom” to offer.

a) “Not the wisdom of this age”
i) Each age has its own “wisdom” to offer.
ii) Secular wisdom has its own set of wisdom to offer.
b) “Nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing”
i) The word used in the Old Testament to describe “rulers” was “shepherds”.
ii) In Paul’s time the word to describe those in authority was “rulers”. However, he was not impressed with the wisdom he found in them.
c) General classifications
i) Medieval (Middle Ages)
ii) Enlightenment (Renaissance)
iii) Modern (Post Second World War)
iv) Post-Modern (we are supposedly in this age)

Let us cultivate the wisdom that God offers in His Word, the Holy Scriptures. There are numerous texts in the Scriptures that encourage us to obtain wisdom (Proverbs 1-9; James 1:17).
