Focus: “A man who was blind from birth” IV

INTRODUCTION

1. The Former Blind Man 

a) He did not have much knowledge of the Lord Jesus initially
b) He knew the Lord’s name was “Jesus” (John 9:11)
c) He knew that he was healed by the Lord Jesus
He had received his sight (John 9:11)

2. The Faith of the Former Blind Man

a) He was interrogated by the Pharisees
b) They sought to intimidate him
c) The more they tried, the clearer and stronger his faith became

THE INTRROGATION OF THE FORMER BLIND MAN

1. The Pharisees called him again (John 9:24a)

a) Tactic # 1
The invocation of God’s name
“Give God the glory!” John 9:24b
b) Tactic #2
“We know that this Man is a sinner” John 9:24c

2. The Reply of the Former Blind Man

a) The man answered (John 9:25a)
b) “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know.” John 9:25b
i) He refused to endorse what the Pharisees intimated
ii) He does not know enough to discuss “the doctrine of sin”
c) “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25c
i) There is one thing he does know
ii) He was blind before; but now he sees

3. The Pharisees tried to push the old issue

a) Then they said to him again (John 9:26a)
b) “What did He do to you? (John 9:26b)
c) How did He open your eyes?” (John 9:26c)

4. The sarcasm of the former blind man

a) He answered them (John 9:27a)
b) “I told you already, and you did not listen. (John 9:27b)
c) “Why do you want to hear it again?” (John 9:27c)
d) “Do you also want to become His disciples?” (John 9:27d)
e) His reply:
i) He showed resistance
ii) He was not afraid
iii) He was resolute

5. The Retort of the Pharisees

a) Then they reviled him and said (John 9:28a)
b)  “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples” (John 9:28b)
c) “We know that God spoke to Moses;” (John 9:29a)
d) “As for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.” (John 9:29b)
e) This was not Interrogation anymore
i) This was resorting to reviling
ii) They were angry

6. Heavier sarcasm

a) The man answered and said to them, (John 9:30a)
b) “Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! (John 9:30b)
c) “Now we know that God does not hear sinners;” (John 9:31a)
d) “But if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.” (John 9:31b)
e)Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind.” (John 9:32)
f)  “If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.” (John 9:33)
g) The theology of the former blind man
i) His understanding of God may be rudimentary
ii) But he is essentially correct
iii) He stands up for the Lord Jesus as One who does God’s will

7. Resorting to abuse of their authority

a)  They answered and said to him (John 9:34a)
b) “You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” (John 9:34b)
c) And they cast him out (John 9:34c)

CONCLUSION

1. The Faith of the Former Blind Man

a) Genuine faith
b) Growing faith
c) Good faith

2. Bearing witness for Lord

a) Courage
b) Commitment
