THE BATTLE WITH THE AMALEKITES

1. Who were the Amalekites?

a) They came from the line of Esau
b) Grandson of Esau was called Amalek   (Genesis 36:16)

2. The Amalekites

a) Nomads
b) Marauders

3. They attacked Israel without provocation

INTRODUCTION TO JOSHUA

1. Assigned to lead an army to defend Israel   (Exodus 17:8)

2. He was entrusted to form an army

MOSES’ ROLE

1. He will pray for Israel

2. He will make use of the rod which had now become a symbolic instrument

3. Two supporters with Moses

a) Aaron
b) Hur

4. Holding up of hands in prayer   (Exodus 17:11)

a) Holding up hands Israel prevailed
b) Letting down hand Amalek prevailed
c) Tired hands upheld by Aaron and Hur   (Exodus 17:12)

5. Joshua defeats Amalek   (Exodus 17:13)

PRONOUNCEMENT OF JUDGMENT AGAINST AMALEK

1. A divine judgment   (Exodus 17:14)

a) The name of Amalek would be blotted out
b) This tribe would be punished

2. This judgment would be written down in a book

ALTAR RAISED

1. Altar called “The-LORD-is-my Banner”   (Exodus 17:15)

2. The Lord would wage war against the Amalekites from generation to generation

3. This was a divine oath from the Lord   (Exodus 17:16)
