An Appreciation of Israel’s Status as a Nation

Text: Deuteronomy 4:7-14

AN APPRECIATION OF ISRAEL’S STATUS AS A NATION

1. A great nation   (Deuteronomy 4:7)

a) This phrase “a great nation” was repeated for emphasis
b) “Greatness” is defined differently here

2. God is near to the nation   (Deuteronomy 4:7)

3. God will hear the “call” of the nation   (Deuteronomy 4:7)

4. The Law of God given to Israel   (Deuteronomy 4:8)

a) Statutes
b) Righteous judgments

RESPONSIBILITY TO RESPOND APPROPRIATELY

1. Take heed to yourself   (Deuteronomy 4:9)

2. Diligently keep yourself   (Deuteronomy 4:9)

3. Lest you forget the things you have seen   (Deuteronomy 4:9)

4. Lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life   (Deuteronomy 4:9)

TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION

1. Teach them to your children   (Deuteronomy 4:9)

2. And to your grandchildren   (Deuteronomy 4:9)

1. The day you stood before the LORD   (Deuteronomy 4:10)

a) The LORD’s word to him   (Deuteronomy 4:10)
i) Gather the people to Me
ii) And I will let them hear My words
iii) That they may learn to fear Me (always)
iv) That they may teach their children
b) The people drawing near   (Deuteronomy 4:11)
i) You came near and stood at the mountain
ii) Mountain burned with fire to the midst of heaven
iii) With darkness, cloud and thick darkness
c) And the LORD spoke to you   (Deuteronomy 4:12)
i) You heard the sound of the words
ii) But saw no form
iii) You only heard a voice
d) The covenant   (Deuteronomy 4:13)
i) He declared to you the covenant
ii) Which He commanded you to perform
iii) The Ten Commandments (encapsulated the Covenant)
iv) He wrote them on two tablets of stone
e) Commandment given to Moses
i) To teach statutes and judgments
ii) The people are to observe them in the land of Canaan which they would possess soon
