Allowance For Divorce

Text: Deuteronomy 24:1-4

ALLOWANCE FOR DIVORCE

1. If she finds no favour in his eyes

2. Because he has found some uncleanness in his eyes

3. He may:

a) Write her a certificate of divorce   (Deuteronomy 24:1a)
b) Put it in her hand   (Deuteronomy 24:1b)
c) Sends her out of his house   (Deuteronomy 24:1c)

THE DIVORCED WOMAN

1. She is divorced legally   (Deuteronomy 24:2a)

2. She marries another man   (Deuteronomy 24:2b)

DIVORCED AGAIN

1. The latter husband detests her   (Deuteronomy 24:3a)

2. Writes her a certificate of divorce   (Deuteronomy 24:3b)

3. Death of the latter husband   (Deuteronomy 24:3c)

THE FORMER HUSBAND

1. He is not allowed to take her back as his wife   (Deuteronomy 24:4a)

2. She is classified as “defiled”   (Deuteronomy 24:4b)

3. An abomination to the LORD   (Deuteronomy 24:4c)

SIN IN THE LAND

1. Through abomination in the eyes of the LORD

2. Through disobedience

TEACHING ABOUT DIVORCE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Matthew 19:1-9

1. Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?   (Matthew 19:7)

2. Response of Jesus

a) Because of the hardness of your heart   (Matthew 19:8a)
b) It was permitted   (Matthew 19:8b)
c) At the beginning it was not so   (Matthew 19:8c)
d) Divorce will end up with adultery   (Matthew 19:9)
