These were commanded by the LORD.
Israel was to give due attention to these things   (Deuteronomy 6:1)

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

1. This is to be cultivated   (Deuteronomy 6:2)

2. This will evidence itself in

a) The keeping of God’s commandments
b) All to keep the Lord’s commandments
i) You (Present generation)
ii) Your son (Next generation)
iii) Your grandson (Third generation)   (Deuteronomy 6:2)
c) All the days of your life

3. Promised Results

Life will be prolonged   (Deuteronomy 6:2)

EXHORTATION

1. Therefore, hear, O Israel   (Deuteronomy 6:3)

2. Be careful

3. Observe it

4. Another promised result   (Deuteronomy 6:3)

a) That it may be well with you
b) That you may multiply greatly in the Promised Land

THE SHEMA OF ISRAEL

“Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is One!

And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5

1. A Call to Israel

a) To worship
b) To bear in mind that they have only One LORD God

2. Appropriate Response

a) To love the LORD
b) With their whole being (Heart, soul and strength)

KEEPING OF GOD’S WORD

1. To be kept in the heart   (Deuteronomy 6:6)

2. To teach these commandments to the children diligently   (Deuteronomy 6:7)

a) Sit
b) Walk
c) Lie down
d) Rise up

3. Other means of teaching

a) Sign on the hand   (Deuteronomy 6:7)
b) Frontlet between the eyes   (Deuteronomy 6:8)
c) On the doorposts of the house and gates   (Deuteronomy 6:9)
