Theme: The LORD as King

1. Asking for a king (1 Samuel 8:4-5)

a) Samuel was old
b) His sons did not walk in the ways of Samuel
c) They asked Samuel to give them a king
i) Just like the other nations
ii) To judge them

2. The displeasure of Samuel (1 Samuel 8:6)

a) He was upset
b) He prayed to the Lord
i) For guidance
ii) For His word to be given

3. God’s answer to Samuel (1 Samuel 8:7-9)

a) The people had not rejected Samuel
b) They had rejected the Lord as their Ruler (though not expressly spoken)
c) This had been Israel’s way all this while
i) From the time He had brought them out of Egypt
ii) Right up to the days of Samuel
iii) They had forsaken the LORD
iv) They had served other gods
d) The request of the people to be acceded to
“Heed their voice” 1 Samuel 8:9, 22
e) Give solemn instruction and warning about earthly kings

4. The behavior of the king they insisted on having (forewarning 1 Samuel 8:10-22)

a) He will take your sons for his army

b) He will take your daughters

He will take ten percent and give that to his people supporting him

f) You will be his servants

5. Regret (1 Samuel 8:18)

b) But God will not hear

6. Stubbornness of the people (1 Samuel 8:19-20)

a) They refused to obey Samuel
